About the BBFANSW - Organisation Profile

The formation of the Bed & Breakfast and Farmstay Association of New South Wales Incorporated

The BBFANSW was established on 1 April 2003 by an amalgamation of the Bed & Breakfast Council of New South Wales and the New South Wales Farm & Country Holiday Association.

The Bed & Breakfast Council New South Wales

The Bed & Breakfast Council of New South Wales was established in October 1996 by the formation of a "steering committee" to bring the association into being and to address issues that affected the successful establishment and operation of "Bed & Breakfast" accommodation in New South Wales and the ACT. It was established as an association incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act of 1987. Initially comprised of a majority of metropolitan - based businesses, the Council quickly grew to a membership mix that had a substantial majority of its members outside the major metropolitan centres of the state. At the time of the amalgamation it had somewhat in excess of three hundred members. It is growing at a steady rate approaching fifty each year.

During the period since it was first established, the Council has been able to develop a useful range of member benefits. The Council also developed an information flow that occurs through its newsletter, Bedhead, as well as state and regional conferences and seminars. A major function of the Council has been its [behind the scenes] work in regard to government at local, state and federal level and with state and national tourism bodies.

Prior to 1996 operators were able to join the Australian Bed & Breakfast Council which, at that time, accepted membership from individual bed and breakfast accommodations operators. Now its constitution provides for state and territory B&B Associations as sole members.

The New South Wales Farm and Country Holiday Association

The New South Wales Farm & Country Holiday Association was first formed in 1987 to serve as a vehicle through which insurance for horse riding might be facilitated in general circumstances where such insurance was not available for individual operators.

This was followed by the inaugural meetings of the Australian Farm & Country Holiday Association, the NSW branch meeting of the Australian Farm & Country Holiday Association and the inaugural meeting of the New South Wales Farm & Country Holiday Association, all at 10 am on 17 June at the El Rancho Hotel Epping Road.

Over the years it had become much more focused on "marketing" and promoting member properties and working through a booking agent appointed by the association together with a related annual Farm & Country Holiday brochure.

The Bed & Breakfast and Farmstay Association of New South Wales

Since April 2003 the combined association has moved ahead consolidating the strengths of both antecedent organisations through its firm commitment to its statement of Strategic Position of the Association and the associated annual business planning and setting of objectives that is published each year to members in the Association's newsletter Bedhead.

This provides the framework of a comprehensive range of bed and breakfast and farmstay accommodation owners and operators member benefits that begins with an automatic listing of full members on the Association's Accommodation Directory Website as soon as they join - with direct links to the member's b&b or farmstay accommodations website.

It also provides as integral to membership a listing in the hard copy B&B and Farmstay Accommodation Guide produced each year.

The Association's aim is to provide, in one form or another, direct benefits to members that far outweigh the cost of membership.

Through its Code of Practice, the Bed & Breakfast and Farmstay Association is committed to providing an image of its industry and of its individual operators that indicate a high quality, service driven experience for travellers throughout New South Wales and the ACT. When guests see the logo of the Association, they will have their assurance of the quality of their bed and breakfast or farmstay accommodation experience!
