Bed & Breakfast Tourism Training - TAFE NSW

Advanced tourism training courses, for operators with some experience in their B&B or Farmstay, have been arranged through the TAFE NSW - Western Sydney Institute.

In 2008 an exciting new delivery mode will make the B&B/Farmstay Tourism Course more accessible to more people. The new format has been developed following consultation with the Bed & Breakfast and Farmstay NSW and ACT, incorporating feedback from people who have previously taken the course.

One of the most attractive features of the training is that the content is tailored to the specific requirements of the Bed and Breakfast and Farmstay sector. Assessment tasks are practical and designed to enhance the operation of your B&B or farmstay business.

Each course can be completed separately and in any order.

Course 1 - Bed and Breakfast Tourism - Marketing
- Tourism Marketing Activities (includes Marketing Fundamentals)
- Develop and Update Tourism Industry Knowledge
You will develop a marketing plan for your own business and learn more about how the tourism industry works.

Course 2 - Bed and Breakfast Tourism - Operations and Safety
- Develop and Implement Operational Plans
- Establish and Maintain a Safe and Secure Workplace
- Develop and Update Local Knowledge
Develop an operational plan and risk management strategies for your own business. Prepare a portfolio of local information for your guests.

Course 3 - Bed and Breakfast Tourism - Business Planning
- Develop and Implement a Business Plan
- Interpret Financial Information
Prepare a business plan for your own business and improve your knowledge of accounting.

For each course, attendance at an introductory workshop is recommended. At the workshop, you will be given an overview of the module content, learning resources and guidance on completing assessment tasks. Thereafter, you will study and complete the assessment tasks at home in your own time. Study support will be available by phone and email from teaching staff at Blue Mountains College.

Workshops are currently held at Blue Mountains College at Wentworth Falls. It may also be possible to organise workshops in your region depending on the level of interest (minimum 8 participants).

Responsible Service of Alcohol

The NSW Liquor Bill 2007 will make it legal for B&Bs and Farmstays in New South Wales to serve alcohol, to eight or less Adult guests, without having to purchase a liquor licence. If you're going to offer alcohol to your guests, the person in the B&B/Farmstay who serves the drinks will need a Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification.

For more information go to the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing Website to read about the new NSW Liquor Bill 2007.

For a list of approved training course providers from which to obtain your RSA see the Responsible service of alcohol section.

Other B&B Training Opportunities

Entry level training courses for new or prospective operators of B&Bs or Farmstays - particularly for those with no experience of the hospitality industry - are also available from Stewart Whyte of Market Probe Australia.
